1. Start with the total outstanding obligation
Original principal balance, plus accrued interest through the date of repossession, plus any advances or additional fees provided for in the agreement. This is the total amount owed, before any sale proceeds are applied.
2. Subtract the net proceeds from the sale
Net proceeds means the gross sale price minus the reasonable costs of the disposition itself, auction or marketing fees, transport, storage, and similar costs directly tied to selling that specific collateral. Where These Calculations Tend to Go Wrong
